Grout Cracking in Burntwood

Grout cracking or falling out between your tiles in Burntwood? What causes it, why it matters in showers, and how regrouting fixes it properly.

01

Look for a pattern

Cracks along one line often mean the floor or wall is moving there.

02

Showers first

Cracked grout in a shower lets water behind the tiles. Fix it before it causes damage.

03

Flexible grout

Floors over timber and walls that move need a flexible grout, not a rigid one.

04

Regrout, do not paint over

Grout pens hide the colour, not the crack. Raking out and regrouting is the fix.

05

Seal afterwards

Sealing cement grout helps it resist water and dirt.

Cracked or crumbling grout is more than a cosmetic problem, especially in a shower or on a floor. Grout seals the gaps between tiles, so once it cracks, water can get behind the tiles and into the wall or floor beneath. The usual causes are movement, old grout that has dried out, a mix that was too weak when it went in, or a rigid grout used where a flexible one was needed.

On floors, cracked grout often follows a line where the floor underneath flexes, such as old floorboards in an upstairs bathroom or the join between an extension and the original house. In showers, constant wetting and drying wears grout down over the years.

Around Burntwood, Chasetown and Chase Terrace we see it most in older bathrooms and on floors laid over timber. The fix is to rake out the damaged grout, deal with any movement causing it, and regrout with the right flexible or wet-area grout, then seal it.

It is also worth checking whether it is the grout or the tile that has cracked. A crack running straight through a tile usually means the tile was not fully bedded or the floor below has shifted, and that tile needs lifting and rebedding rather than just regrouting. Telling us which you can see, ideally with a photo, saves time on the visit.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Why is my grout cracking?

Usually movement, old dried-out grout, a weak mix, or rigid grout where flexible was needed.

Is cracked grout a problem?

In wet areas, yes. It lets water behind the tiles, which can damage the wall or floor.

Can you just regrout?

Usually, yes, as long as the tiles are firm. Any loose tiles are rebedded first.

Will it crack again?

Not if the movement is dealt with and the right grout is used.
